Can children get Black Fungus disease?

It is not yet proven in any of the studies or by any of the scientist that proves that black fungus also known as COVID-associated mucromycosis is affecting children in a different manner.

As for now we can know about the precautions, symptoms, cure, etc. so that less to less people are affected by this disease as it is always said that “prevention is better than cure”.

It is a fungal infection caused by fungi and the common

sources of infections are soil, damp walls on old buildings etc. so the three most important precautions to be kept in mind are firstly, maintenance of good and proper hygiene for yourself and around you so that chances of catching this disease are reduced. Secondly, as this not a communicable disease like covid so there is no need to create panic just to have proper information about it. Third but not the last early diagnosis and aggressive treatment can definitely help to reduce the cases and possibilities of this disease. Though the precautions are simple but really very important because though it is rare kind of fungal infection affecting 1 in 10,00,000 people but with an overall  mortality rate of 50 percent. The disease if often characterised by hyphae growing in and around blood vessels and can be potentially life-threatening in  diabetic or several immunocompromised individuals.

Some of the mainly witnessed symptoms of black fungus are:-

  • Sinusitis- nasal blockage or congestion.
  • Local pain, numbness or swelling. Facial pain or double vision with pain.
  • Blackish discolouration over the bridge of nose/palate.
  • Loosening of teeth, jaw involvement.
  • Chest pain, pleural effusion, worsening of respiratory symptoms.

These are some of the common symptoms of a person suffering from black fungus.

People in an extreme immune-compromised state are likely to contact with the infection. Diagnostics across the country raise caution against the increased prevalence of mucromycosis or say black fungus during COVID-19, urging people to keep their sugar levels under check to reduce the risk. Till now, the only cure to this dangerous disease is anti-fungal drug Ampho B which is also in shortage due to sudden increase in demand.
